Description

Chine Lodge is a cottage built around 1855, featuring a cottage ornee style with a mid-20th century extension. It is constructed from coursed stone rubble and has a tiled roof, along with brick clustered chimneystacks and decorative wooden elements. The building has two storeys and four windows.

On the south elevation, there is a first-floor projecting gable on the left side, which has applied diagonal framing and elaborate cusped bargeboards. This gable features a four-light oriel window supported by intricate wooden brackets. Below, there are two three-light casements under gables with cusped bargeboards, along with a smaller three-light canted oriel window that has a tiled roof and wooden brackets. The ground floor is partially obscured by a mid-20th century wooden and glazed verandah but includes three mullioned and transomed casements, as well as a penticed doorcase with wooden supports, a balustrade, and a panelled door.

The east elevation showcases a first floor decorated with applied diamond and diagonal framing, featuring a five-light oriel window on brackets and a canted French window on the ground floor. The roof has an off-central clustered diagonally set back chimneystack and a smaller clustered stack at the rear of the ridge on the right side. Additionally, there is a decorative carved wooden eaves cornice.

Chine Lodge is located on the site of the early 19th century 'Honeymoon Cottage', which was popular for renting to newly-married couples and served as a school between 1820 and 1855. However, the existing structure appears to be entirely from the mid-19th century.
