Description

The Hot Brine Bath, dating from around 1845, features a marble basin with a sloping back and two steps at the front, which are assisted by a ramped wooden handrail supported by turned wooden balusters. This bath was originally located at Fisherman's Cottage but was moved in 1970. Sea water was piped to the cottage and heated in a large copper tank using a fire underneath. Hot brine baths were believed to have special health benefits, although their popularity declined towards the end of the 19th century as sea bathing became more fashionable. This structure is included for its historical interest.
