Description

The Department of Employment is a mid-19th century purpose-built office building located on the south side of Sun Hill in West Cowes. The building is stuccoed and consists of two storeys with three windows. It features a balustraded parapet that conceals the roof, which includes a central panel with a pediment. This panel displays a carved figure of a working man along with the inscription "UNITA BENE VOLENTIA ET CONCORDIA." The building is topped with urn finials. There are three sash windows, including a central projecting bay. The entrance has a cambered doorcase with rusticated and partially vermiculated pilasters, topped by a curved pediment that is decorated with carved sea monsters. The red brick range at the rear belongs to the adjacent Rawlings Hotel and is not included as part of the listed building.
