Description
30 New Road is a mid-19th century office building in Brighton, constructed of stucco with a parapeted roof. It stands three storeys above a basement and features a three-window range in an Italianate style. The ground-floor openings are round arched and rebated, with the entrance located to the left and two windows to the right, both having projecting sills above panelled spandrels. The ground floor is designed with banded rustication, displaying vermiculated voussoirs over the openings, although the keystones are plain.
An entablature band separates the ground and first floors, featuring a guilloche frieze and topped by a plinth band just below the first-floor windows. The upper floor windows are flat arched, each with architraves; the second-floor window architraves are eared and shouldered. Each first-floor window is adorned with a pediment supported by console brackets, with the centre window having a triangular pediment and the side windows featuring segmental pediments. The second-floor sill band is decorated with a guilloche and cornice. The elevation is topped with a moulded entablature that includes a bracketed projecting cornice. Quoin strips at the party and corner walls of the first and second floors are interrupted by the second-floor sill band. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value, showcasing a robust stucco front.
