Description
The Fountain Hotel, built in 1803, is located on the east side of High Street in West Cowes. The building is stuccoed, with a rusticated ground floor and a cornice above. It stands three storeys tall with attics, featuring six windows and two dormers. The three northernmost window bays are recessed. The building has long and short quoins on both the projecting and recessed sections, and pilasters flanking the ground floor. A cornice and parapet conceal the roof. At the north end of the front, there is a carriage archway, above which is a flattened bow window with three lights, flanked by pilasters, a design commonly seen in Ryde. The main ground and first floor windows in the projecting section are also flanked by pilasters and have semi-circular tympana above them. The doorcase features pilasters topped with cresting above the cornice and a semi-circular tympanum. Fountain Quay is adjacent to the hotel.
