Description
Nos 40 and 42 on High Street are three-storey houses with a stucco finish, built around 1840 as part of an unfinished terrace. The upper floors are flanked by pilasters, with a string course at the pedestal level that extends across the first floor, topped by a bed mould capping, a band course, and a blocking course. No 40 features three windows on the upper floors, with the center window being blind. The second-floor windows have flat surrounds and moulded sills supported by consoles. The first-floor windows have architrave surrounds with entablatures above; the center window is also blind and has inset fluted pilasters supporting an archivolt arch with a key. Between capped dies rising from the moulded sill course are ornate scroll and wreath cast iron balconettes. The windows are fitted with glazing bar sashes. No 42 has similar architectural details but only two windows on the upper floors. The ground floor of both houses has rusticated pilasters at each end and round-arched doorways with doors featuring two vertical panels. The fanlight of No 42 retains a marginal and concentric glazing pattern, with inset flanking pilasters. The shop front has been altered, and there is a modern fascia. Nos 34 to 48 form a group, with Nos 34 to 38 and Nos 44 to 48 being of local interest only.
