Description
No. 6 St James's Street is an early and substantial house dating from around 1800, located in Ryde. The entrance front faces north and features three storeys with a stucco finish. The walls are topped with brick coping that leads to a low-pitched hipped slate roof with conical eaves. There are three recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars and block sills. The west side has superimposed bay windows with three lights on the ground and first floors, featuring sashes with intact glazing bars on the ground floor, incised dividing pilaster strips, a plain frieze, a shallow projecting cornice that flares to the side, and incised panels on the first-floor apron.
A fine Tuscan porch with free-standing columns and pilasters leads to the entrance, which has an entablature above and is now glazed in. The door is recessed and has six incised panels within an architrave surround. The elevation facing the street is rough cast with rendered bands and surrounds, featuring two recessed sash windows with later glazing bars and rendered surrounds, along with block sills.
To the west, there is a single-storey wing that is also stucco faced, complete with a parapet and block string course. This wing has a round-headed withe containing a small casement window, with a hatch to the left.
Inside, there is a good but simple central staircase with a continuous mahogany handrail and plain square balusters that are scrolled at the foot. The tread mouldings project with shaped brackets applied to the side, and the staircase rises around a narrow rectangular well that is curved at each end.
This building forms a group with No. 5 St Thomas's Street.
