Description
No. 1 Rainbow Hill Terrace is a terraced house dating from approximately 1830 to 1850, with later additions and alterations. It is built of painted stucco over brick, with a concrete tile roof replacing slate. The left-hand gable has a curvilinear shape constructed of brick, with brick coping and an incorporated stack. A wrought-iron balustrade runs along the first floor.
The house has a double-depth plan with a hall on the right side. The exterior features two storeys with a basement and attic, and three first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes an eaves band with modillions and brackets to the soffit, with recessed panels between each bracket. There are corbels to the upper-floor window sills, and a moulded cornice with a plain frieze above the entrance. The first-floor windows are 1/1 sashes in plain reveals, with a sill. A recessed area to the right contains a French window with an overlight, flanked by Tuscan-style columns linked by an elongated figure-of-eight motif balustrade. A hipped roof bay to the ground-floor left has a 1/1 sash window with 1/1 sidelights, and a two-pane fixed light to each return. Six roll-edged stone steps with low flanking walls lead to a recessed porch with Tuscan-style antae; the porch has a pair of replacement part-glazed doors with sidelights and an overlight. There are two gabled dormers with four-pane casements. A very narrow, full-height wing, set well back to the left return, has 1/1 sashes and a single replacement window. The porch has a polychromatic ceramic tile floor that extends into the hall.
The interior retains original plaster cornices and joinery details, including four-panel doors. The staircase features slender turned balusters and a wreathed handrail.
Nos. 1 to 10 Rainbow Hill Terrace, together, form a notable group of listed buildings, comparable with other developments of the same period in Worcester, such as Britannia Square, Lansdowne Crescent, and Lark Hill.
