Description

The pair of houses at 4 and 5 Rainbow Hill Terrace were built around 1830 to 1850 as part of a terrace. They are constructed of painted stucco over brick, with a concealed roof behind a coped parapet. Chimneys flank the ends, with the left chimney featuring overhanging details and pots. A wooden porch with a wrought-iron screen is to the left of the left house, while a wooden balcony, supported by cast-iron pillars with wrought-iron embellishments, is to the right of the right house. Both houses have wooden door surrounds.

The houses are arranged with a double-depth plan and adjacent entrance halls. The exterior has three storeys and a basement, featuring five second-floor windows (arranged 3:2), three first-floor windows (2:1), and three ground-floor windows (2:1). Stucco detailing includes a plinth and a band above the second-floor windows, along with a plain architrave to the ground-floor window of the right-hand house.

The left house has 6/6 sash windows throughout, except for 3/6 sashes on the second floor; all are set in plain reveals with sills. A six-step approach leads to a Doric-style porch with a decorative, open geometric screen to the left side. The door has four panels, with the upper two and central panels raised and fielded, and the bottom panel flush-beaded, with matching panelled reveals and a plain fanlight. A 6/6 sash window is present in the basement.

The right house's second-floor windows are 2/2 unequal sashes. A large, semi-circular oriel window on the first floor has a blind recess to the front, flanked by French windows with margin-glazing. These windows provide access to the balcony, which is partly supported by columns and partly cantilevered, with a simple metal balustrade. The ground floor features a 6/6 sash window. A six-step approach leads to a six-panel door, with the bottom panels flush-beaded and the upper four glazed, visually divided into a pair by a flush bead. The doorcase incorporates fluted pilasters and a matching frieze. The decorative open screen to the left of the door mirrors that of the left house, and the balcony column spandrel brackets are similarly patterned.

The interior retains original features, including panelled doors and window shutters, skirtings, architraves, and plaster cornices. The right house also features a scrolled cast-iron balustrade to the staircase and polychromatic ceramic floor tiles in the hall.

Numbers 1 to 10 of Rainbow Hill Terrace, including 4 and 5, form a notable group of listed buildings that compare favourably with other developments from the same period in Worcester, such as Britannia Square, Lansdowne Crescent, and Lark Hill.
