Description
No. 10 Rainbow Hill Terrace is a house that is part of a terrace built around 1830 to 1850, with later additions and alterations. The exterior features painted stucco over brick and a hipped slate roof, with stacks located at the left hip-end and the ridge of the right return, both finished in stucco with brick oversailing detail and pots. There is a timber porch.
The house has an infilled L-shaped plan, with a central hallway leading to a central staircase. It stands two storeys tall with a cellar. The principal elevation faces south and includes three first-floor windows and two ground-floor windows, all of which are 6/6 sashes set in plain reveals with sills. The stucco is scored to resemble ashlar, and there is a simple plinth. The central porch is in the Doric style, featuring fluted columns and plain pilasters, with two roll-edged steps leading up to a three-panel door. The upper panel of the door is margin-glazed, while the bottom panels are flush with a raised half-round bead, and there is a radial pattern fanlight above. To the left of the main house is a two-storey wing that connects it to the terrace, featuring a first-floor semi-circular headed 14/8 window with Gothic-style tracery. There is also a late 20th-century conservatory on the ground floor.
The east elevation has four first-floor 6/6 sash windows. The ground floor features a central canted bay with margin-light 1/1 sashes, and an additional 6/6 sash window to the left of the bay. To the right, there is a late 20th-century purpose-made 9-pane part-glazed door.
The rear elevation includes 2/4, 4/4, and 8/8 sash windows, as well as a 14/8 semi-circular leaded sash window similar to those on the front. There is a 20th-century part-glazed door and doorcase.
Inside, the house retains some original features, including panelled doors, architraves with paterae at the corners, some plaster cornices, and polychromatic ceramic tiles on the hall floor. The open-well staircase has slender square balusters arranged with a hint of Chinoiserie.
Historically, Nos. 1-10 Rainbow Hill Terrace form a notable group of listed buildings that compare well with other developments from this period in Worcester, such as Britannia Square, Lansdowne Crescent, and Lark Hill.
