Description
No. 47 Grand Parade is a terraced house built around 1840, attributed to Sir Charles Barry. The building features a combination of stucco and yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, topped with a slate roof. It stands four storeys over a basement and includes dormers, with a four-window range.
The ground floor was refurbished in 1989-90, replacing a 20th-century shop front. It is decorated with vermiculated rustication and has steps leading up to a broad, segmental-arched entrance with double doors. To the left, there is a shallow full-height segmental bay that contains three windows. The ground-floor windows are segmental-arched with chamfered reveals, while the upper floors feature vermiculated quoins on the sides. All upper windows are flat-arched, with the first and second-floor windows having moulded stucco architraves and cornices. The second-floor windows also include a sill band of Vitruvian scrolls. The third-floor windows have plain architraves and bracketed sills. The building is topped with a modillion cornice, a balustraded parapet, and dormers in the roof.
The interior has not been inspected. Notably, this house was the first home of the Brighton Grammar School.
