Description

Numbers 1-6 Vernon Terrace are a group of terraced houses dating from around 1860. They are constructed of stucco, with the roofs hidden behind a parapet. Numbers 1 and 6 are four storeys high with a basement, while numbers 2-5 are three storeys high with a basement. The houses have a three-window facade, with number 1 having a two-window facade. The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication. The entrances are flat-arched; those to numbers 2 and 3 have pilasters and an entablature, number 4 lacks an architrave, and numbers 5 and 6 have paired porches with pilasters on the outer piers, rustication on the inner, and a shared entablature. All windows are flat-arched. First-floor windows feature moulded stucco architraves and segmental pediments to numbers 1 and 3, and a segmental and triangular pediment to number 2. Continuous bracketed balconies with bowed cast-iron railings are present on the first floor. Second-floor windows have moulded stucco architraves. Nos. 1-3 have a modillion cornice, while numbers 4-6 have an ordinary cornice. The fourth floor of numbers 1 and 6 has windows with moulded stucco architraves, and an additional cornice. A blocking course runs throughout the facades; stacks are located on the party walls. Number 1 has a return elevation in Windlesham Avenue, featuring an entrance where the architrave is currently missing. The ground floor of this return is rusticated, and a shallow, five-sided bay is located west of the entrance, likely a later addition. The interior has not been inspected. Cast-iron area railings are present in Windlesham Avenue, and some railings flank the entrances in Vernon Terrace.
