Description
Nos. 45-48 on Meeting House Lane are houses that have been converted into shops and offices, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The exterior is finished in stucco that has been scored to imitate ashlar. The roofs of Nos. 45 and 46 are tiled, while the roofs of Nos. 47 and 48 are not visible due to the narrowness of the street.
The buildings are three storeys high and can be grouped into pairs: Nos. 45 and 46, and Nos. 47 and 48, each with a three-window range. The ground floor of Nos. 45 and 46 features a single shop that has been extensively rebuilt in the late 20th century, following an early 19th-century design. Nos. 47 and 48 each have their own shop, with No. 47 showcasing a 19th-century sliding sash window and an entablature, while No. 48 has the entablature only. All ground-floor openings are flat arched, and the windows above are camber arched with projecting sills. The first-floor windows have original 19th-century 6 x 6 sashes, while the second-floor windows have 3 x 6 sashes. The central range of each pair is blocked, indicating that they were originally single houses. Nos. 45 and 46 have boxed and guttered eaves, while Nos. 47 and 48 have guttered eaves. An iron sign standard from the 19th century is attached to the front wall of Nos. 45 and 46.
The interiors were not inspected. These buildings are part of an important group with other nearby structures on Meeting House Lane, which is located in the historic Old Town area known as the Lanes.
