Description

31 and 32 Cannon Place are terraced houses located in Brighton, originally built around 1833 as the Royal Newburgh Assembly Rooms. The architects Amon Wilds and Charles Augustine Busby designed the building for Charles Wright, a bookseller and librarian. The exterior features stucco and roofs that are hidden by a parapet.

The houses rise four storeys above a basement. The front facing Cannon Place has a one-window range for No.31 and a seven-window range for No.32. No.32 includes a flat-arched entrance in the outer bay with an overlight, while all windows are flat-arched. It has a full-height segmental bay with tripartite windows, a bracketed balcony on the first floor, a principal cornice on the second floor, a secondary cornice on the third floor, and a parapet. The front of No.31 is similar but features only the segmental bay.

On the St Margaret's Place side, there is a portico for the three central bays, with outer antae that have capitals decorated with palmette ornament. The inner engaged columns feature capitals with acanthus and palm leaf ornament, along with an entablature and pediment that has a dentil cornice. The entrance here is flat-arched, with an architrave, cornice, and a storey band above. All windows are flat-arched, with the first-floor windows having architraves while the others do not. There is a cornice and a blocking course above. The interior has not been inspected.
