Description
The structure is a lookout tower located in Tarner Recreation Ground, built in the mid-19th century. It is said to have been constructed by the merchant Edwin Tarner to observe ships entering the port across the Channel. The tower is made of knapped and squared flint with brick dressings, featuring a roof that is obscured by a parapet. It consists of two cylindrical stages, with the top stage set back to create a walkway. There are segmental-arched brick openings with brick jambs on the cardinal points of both stages, and the top stage has two continuous brick lacing courses. The bottom stage has brick and stone coping, while the top stage has brick coping. The tower is positioned over terrace walling made of cobble and brick, which is included in this listing. Originally, these grounds were part of the Tarner House grounds at No. 1 Tilbury Place.
