Description

Numbers 51-56 and their attached railings are a group of terraced houses dating from circa 1818 and probably designed by Amon Wilds and Amon Henry Wilds. The houses are constructed with stucco to the ground floor and painted brick above. The roofs are of Welsh slate, with the roof to number 52 being turnerized.

The houses are four storeys high, with a basement, and each has a single-window range. Numbers 53 and 54 project slightly to form a central feature. The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication. Ionic prostyle porches are present, although the entablature detail has been lost from the porch of number 55. Round-arched entrances with fanlights are visible at numbers 51 and 52, incorporating decorative glazing. Segmental bays extend to the ground and first floors, with broader bays to the first floor, featuring tripartite windows – although the tripartite arrangement has been lost on the first floors of numbers 51-54. A cornice tops the bays, and balconies with cast-iron railings are present to the first-floor windows, with the railings on number 54 being almost completely lost. A canopy covers the entrance to number 52. Original sash windows are retained to the ground floor of number 51, the second, third and first floors of number 55, and the first floor of number 56. A cornice sits above the second-floor windows. Attic windows are segmental-arched and set back under a segmental arch. The parapet is raised at numbers 53 and 54, with dormers in the mansard roof of numbers 52, 53, 54, and 56. Chimney stacks are located on the party walls.

The interior has not been inspected. Cast-iron railings, complete with conical finials, are present at the steps and area.
