Description
Numbers 1-23 Clifton Terrace represents a row of terraced houses dating to around 1850, situated in Brighton. The construction utilizes stucco cladding with a roof of Welsh slate and artificial slate; Number 4 incorporates Turnerised slates.
The terrace is composed of several sections. Numbers 1-11, 15-21, and 23 are two storeys over a basement, with dormers in the roof. Number 22 is also two storeys over a basement. Numbers 12-14 are three storeys over a basement with dormers. Most houses are a one-and-a-half-window range with a central, blank, shared window, although numbers 1, 14, 21-23, and 22 have a three-window range, the central window being blank in numbers 1 and 14. Numbers 1, 14, 22, and 23 are double-fronted. The terrace exhibits a general symmetry, with numbers 12-14 forming a prominent central element. Shared porches are present throughout, except for numbers 1, 14, and 21-23, which have individual porches.
Entrance detailing features segmental-arched framing to flat-arched entrances with overlights. A basement entrance is present at number 1, the former entrance now blocked. Number 23 features a flat-arched entrance under a cornice supported by consoles, and a wing set back to the left. The ground floor incorporates canted bays with concave canopies and cornices (except to numbers 12-14). Tripartite windows are located above the bays on the first floor, with the exception of number 10, which has been altered. Window guards are noted at numbers 4 (ground floor), 8 (first floor), 10 (ground floor), 13 (ground floor), and 15 (ground floor). The first-floor windows have a floating cornice. Numbers 12-14 have a moulded stucco architrave and pediment to the central blank window, along with tripartite windows to the second floor. A bracketed eaves cornice runs along the roofline, with bracket consoles supporting modillions on numbers 1-11 and 15-23. The dormers are original, except for that at number 20, which is a later 19th or early 20th-century addition, featuring decorative panels and a pedimented cornice. Stack chimneys are found in the party walls. Number 23's left-hand return displays a two-window range, and Number 18 Vine Place adjoins it. The interior of the properties has not been inspected.
Cast iron railings with spear-and-tassel finials are present at the steps, alongside stuccoed dwarf garden walls with a moulded coping. Rusticated, corniced gate piers are also present and in remarkable condition.
