Description

The dormitory block, located to the northeast of the east end of the Chapel at Wellington College, was built in 1866 by Sir Arthur Blomfield. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a slate mansard roof with a central louvred turret.

The building has a long rectangular plan and consists of two storeys and attics. The west front is symmetrical and includes sash windows with glazing bars. On the ground floor, there is an arcaded cloister with 14 bays, each featuring round-arched heads; the end bay on the right is narrower and smaller. Above the cloister, there is a moulded cornice and a string course at the level of the first-floor window sills. The eaves cornice is also moulded.

The first-floor windows have recessed brick surrounds with segmental heads and keystones. The central window is flanked by pedimented niches, with a bronze statue in the niche on the left. There is a blind window recess at the right-hand end. The attic windows alternate between single light and two-light designs, each topped with pediments; the pediments over the single light windows are semicircular.

The dormitory block forms the east side of a large court, with the chapel enclosing the south side and Wellington College to the west. The interior has not been inspected.
