Description
The dining hall, common rooms, and colonnade, dated 1906 and designed by CJ Blomfield, are constructed of red brick in English bond, with stone dressings, and have a steeply pitched slate roof with coped gables. The building comprises a large central rectangular section with cross-gabled wings at each end. A colonnade runs along the south front, continuing west to connect with the main Wellington College block.
The building is two storeys high with attics. Most windows are sash windows with glazing bars. Tall chimneys with corniced heads are prominent. The symmetrical south front, facing a courtyard, features a central section of seven bays. Brick pilasters rise to a stone blocking course and cornice. Above the central three bays is a large, semi-circular carved stone pediment divided into three sections, displaying a coat of arms flanked by figures. The first-floor windows are tall, incorporating a single mullion and two transoms, with moulded stone segmental heads, and illuminate the dining hall. The roof includes two small, widely spaced lucarnes and an octagonal bell turret with slim columns and festoons at its base. The end gables each have two windows on the first floor, with a stone pedimented niche in the centre. Corner pilasters have alternating stone quoins and a modillioned capital connected by a deep stone band. The attic level is punctuated by a large four-light Diocletian window. A blank section of wall, mirroring the corner quoins, is located on the right-hand gable.
The colonnade, comprising 29 bays of stone, features Tuscan columns and a moulded cornice with a balustraded parapet. Bays 6, 18, and 24 have double columns with pilasters between them, surmounted by semicircular pediments. Bay 12 includes a pedimented gateway with a semi-circular head and a large keystone.
The interior of the large dining hall is characterized by a coffered barrel ceiling with circular garlands above a dentilled and moulded cornice. A panelled gallery occupies the east end. The walls are panelled up to window sill height on all sides.
The dining hall, common rooms, and colonnade form the north side of a large courtyard, bounded to the west by the Wellington College Main Block, to the east by the Dormitory Block, and to the south by the Chapel, Porch and Colonnade.
