Description
Forest End House is a large house, now divided into three separate residences, that was built in 1869, as indicated on the foundation stone. The materials used in its construction include part brick in English bond with bands of dark headers, part painted brick, and part false timber framing with painted render. The house features a steeply pitched old tile roof adorned with multiple gables, bands of fishscale tiles, and crested ridge tiles.
The building has a long, irregular plan with a tower on the west side and stands two storeys high with attics. It is characterized by several tall decorative chimneys with offset heads and clay pots. The casement windows vary, with some featuring glazing bars and others having arched heads. The north-west entrance front is irregular, with a brick ground floor that has a continuous pent roof above, false timber framing on the upper level, decorative balconies, and oriel windows.
Inside, the interiors are generally plain, except for No. 1, which boasts an interesting Jacobean-style interior. This includes a panelled stair hall with a ribbed plaster ceiling, stained glass windows, and a dog-leg staircase with arcaded balustrading. Off the staircase hall is the drawing room, which features an ornamental plaster ceiling with raised borders and a boldly carved chimneypiece with a decorative overmantel that is coved into the ceiling. The dining room has an overmantel plaster ceiling, a moulded ceiling cornice, and an Adam-style chimneypiece. Throughout the house, there are four-panelled doors set in moulded architraves and cornices.
