Description
Elm Lodge is a late 18th-century house, extended around 1900 and restored between 1986 and 1987. The house is built on a timber frame with brick infill, later encased in painted render. It has an old tile roof with wide, overhanging eaves. The plan is L-shaped, with a main section featuring a central staircase and a service wing at the rear incorporating an extension in the internal angle.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a cellar below, and features three corniced chimneys with shaped aprons and clay pots. A kitchen chimney at the rear includes a very large, semicircular base which accommodates a bread oven. Sash windows with glazing bars are set within flush, moulded architrave frames. The south-facing front is symmetrical with three bays and a central, four-panel flush door beneath a later, tiled gabled trellis porch.
The interior has been largely preserved with original features. These include four-panel doors with moulded architraves, panelled window shutters, cast iron fireplaces with wooden surrounds and decorative tile insets, a moulded dado rail, and a semicircular niche in the living room. A straight staircase features stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, with a closed string.
