Description

Government House at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst is a manor house that now serves as the commanding officer's residence. It dates from the late 18th century and was altered in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of painted ashlar with rendered stacks, and while the roof is not visible, there is a hipped slate roof on the right-hand side range.

The house has a double depth plan and is designed in a mid-Georgian style. It stands three storeys tall and features a five-window range with a two-storey, four-window side range. The symmetrical front has a middle bay that is set forward, with platbands, a thin cornice band, and a parapet. The windows are 6/6-pane sashes, some of which are horned. The left-hand return has a five-window range that is mostly blind, except for the second bay from the front, which has 6/6-pane sashes above a curved bay with 6/9-pane horned sashes that extend down to the ground. The garden front includes a wide right-hand canted bay with a parapet, a central 6/6-pane sash, and flanking 4/4-pane sashes, along with French windows above the first-floor windows. The right-hand lower two-storey, four-window range features segmental arched casements.

The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have an entrance hall, a stair, and panelled shutters. Historically, this building was originally the manor house of Sandhurst and became the Commandant's house in the early 19th century after the estate was purchased in 1801 from William Pitt.
