Description
The dry bridge, located in the grounds of Ascot Place approximately 600 meters north-west of the house, dates from the early 19th century and was designed by C.C. Ferard. It is constructed from dressed stone and features east and west faces designed to resemble castle gateways.
The east face has a symmetrical central opening with a pointed arch, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice that projects forward over the center. Above the arch, there are two mythical beast heads, and the face is flanked by weathered buttresses in two stages. The approach to this face is lined with banks of rock.
The west face is also symmetrical, featuring a central section with a pointed arch platband, a plain cornice, and a parapet that includes a Greek-style medallion at its center. Each side of this section has a projection with a platband and a lancet surrounded by a plain border.
This dry bridge is part of a garden that is listed as Grade II* in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Interest in England.
