Description

The tomb of Francis Barker is located in the churchyard of St Peter's Church and dates from 1710. It is a chest tomb made of Portland and Pennant stone. The tomb features angle pilasters adorned with reliefs of trophies of death, designed in the style of John van Nost. Notably, the southwest pilaster has been inserted upside-down. An armorial relief can be found on the east end of the tomb. The inscription on the south side identifies Barker as a Citizen of London and notes that the monument was erected by his sorrowful widow, Elizabeth, and his eldest son, Thomas Barker. Additionally, a ledger slab on the tomb bears an inscription for Mr. Joseph Christopher, while the north side commemorates Mrs. Sarah Crean, who died in 1836.
