Description

The tomb of the Earl of Mount Edgecumbe is located in the churchyard of St Peter's Church. It commemorates Richard, the 2nd Earl of Mount Edgecumbe, who lived from 1764 to 1839. The monument is made of Portland stone and features an arched cover with a pediment and acroteria, resting on a rectangular sarcophagus. There are significant remnants of early black paint on the surface. The epitaph notes that the Earl chose to live in this area for much of his life and wished to be buried here rather than in the distant tomb of his ancestors. It expresses a hope that his spirit may be united with both the rich and the poor in the afterlife. This tomb is a notable example of the later phase of Neo-classicism influenced by archaeological findings.
