Description

Three chest tombs located in the churchyard of St Peter's Church date from around 1818. One tomb is dedicated to Edward Cummings Esq., who died in 1818, another is unidentified, and the third is for Mary Carter, a spinster, also from around 1818. These chest tombs are made of Portland stone, featuring York stone and marble ledger slabs with inscription panels. Originally, they were positioned along the northern edge of the churchyard.

The tomb for Edward Cummings Esq. has a Portland stone chest with an inscribed York stone ledger slab. It features latticed angle pilasters and a raised inscription panel with a drip mould on the south side. There are remnants of protective coats of limewash visible. The unidentified tomb is similar but has a badly weathered marble inscription panel. The tomb for Mary Carter is also similar but shows damage to the ledger in the south-west corner and to the drip mould.
