Description
A pair of villas dating from 1839-40, with later 19th-century rear extensions. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with a slate hipped roof. They are symmetrical in design, standing two storeys high and each with two bays. The main entrance is located in the outer bays of each villa. The front door of each features flush panels beneath vertical glazed panels, topped by a timber porch with a splayed lead roof and fluted fringe. A French window is set within a recessed segmental brick arch, featuring a reeded architrave, a timber canopy with lozenge decoration, and a slender iron window guard. The upper floor windows are sashes with glazing bars, set within almost flat arches. Plain eaves and a central stack are also present. The rear upper floor windows are smaller sashes with glazing bars, set within segmental brick arches. A part-glazed door with a horizontal flush panel below is found on the ground floor of number 165. Each villa has a rear extension under a catslide roof, likely original to the houses. The rear window of number 165 has later margin glazing. Canted bays are visible on the inner face of each villa. A further two-storey extension exists to number 163, while number 165 has a single-storey extension.
The interior of number 165 includes a panelled internal hall partition, divided at dado height, featuring a four-panel door to the front room. The staircase has turned newels, stick balusters, and a partly ramped rail. The interior of number 163 was not inspected.
