Description
A terrace of three houses, Lincoln House (No. 28), Wessex House (No. 27), and Melcombe House (No. 26), was built in the early 1720s as a speculative development by Captain John Gray. The houses are constructed of brown brick with red dressings and have tiled roofs punctuated by tall stacks. They are each three bays wide, set under M-shaped roofs, and two rooms deep, with projecting rear closets and some later additions. All windows have glazing bars and exposed sash boxes, with flat-headed fronts under gauged brick arches.
No. 26 features a doorway dating to the 1840s, with a matching door surround and fanlight. No. 27 has a moulded door surround, a bracketed cornice hood, and a Gothic-style fanlight. No. 28 has a similar door surround and bracketed cornice hood, with a rectangular top light.
The interiors of Nos. 27 and 28 are remarkably complete, featuring shallow moulded panelling, dado rails, and cornices on all floors. Many original fireplaces are present, often set in the corners of rear rooms, along with original closed-string staircases with turned balusters. No. 26 also retains original panelling, although the staircase balusters are of an early 19th-century design, and some rooms were simplified during that time.
Externally, No. 26 has original railings and torch holders. No. 27 features a square brick gatepier with a stone ball top, and a similar pier is present at No. 28, which also retains original railings.
Nos. 26, 27, and 28 Montpelier Row form part of an important terrace dating back to the 1720s.
