Description
Number 29 (Montpelier House) and Number 30 (South End House) form a single block that is more elaborately finished than the surrounding buildings in the row. Both houses feature red brick bands and dressings, a brick cornice, and a panelled parapet.
Number 29 is a three-storey, three-window main block with a cornice and parapet, accompanied by a two-storey, two-window wing to the right, which has a wooden lean-to on a flat roof above. A later two-storey, two-window addition extends beyond this wing to the right. The doorcase is characterised by fluted Doric pilasters and a cornice hood. A brick wall fronts the property, punctuated by four piers topped with stone vases. There is a good iron railing and overthrow, along with a more modern iron gate. The ground-floor windows on the left have lost their original glazing bars.
Number 30 is larger than the others and is situated at the end of the row, with gates providing access to its grounds facing down the road. It is a three-storey building with five windows. A later 20th-century doorcase, constructed from painted stone or cement, is present. The two windows on the top floor to the left have been enlarged and have lost their original glazing bars. The side overlooking the garden and the river also features five windows. To the left of this side is a one-storey "Gothick" stucco addition, now painted pale green, with a semi-hexagonal bay containing tall, pointed windows. At the rear of the main block, one-window wings project to the depth of a blank window. The interiors have not been inspected.
