Description
The Church of St Mary, formerly known as the Church of St Mary the Virgin, is a Grade II listed building located on High Road, E18. The west tower, constructed of brick with angle features, is believed to date from the early 18th century. The main body of the church was built in the early 19th century, with Thorne suggesting a date of 1817, while the chancel was added in the late 19th century.
The interior of the church was destroyed by fire on February 9, 1969, and has since been reconstructed in a plain modern style. The east front, which faces the High Road, has also been rebuilt in a modern style to serve as the entrance. Notable monuments within the church include those dedicated to David Bosanquet from 1741, Charlotte Lee from 1720, and Charles Foulis, which is signed by J Bacon from London in 1783.
The churchyard features an impressive collection of late 18th and early 19th century memorial art, particularly notable for its neo-classical table tombs made of Portland and Coade stone, as well as high-quality headstones.
