Description

The Parish Church Memorial Hall, along with its front railings and gatepiers, was built in 1902 by J. Kingwell Cole and Kenneth Wood for Sir John Roberts. It is constructed of red brick with half-timbering, and has machine tile roofs. The building follows a basilican plan.

The exterior is a rectangular block featuring aisles that project to the front (east), terminating in low service rooms at right angles. A central recessed entrance is topped by a gabled roof with applied timberwork and an inscription reading “PARISH CHURCH/MEMORIAL HALL 1902.” Double timber doors are set behind a segmental arch, with glazed panels. Flanking the entrance are single-story, flat-roofed service rooms extended around 1960, fitted with three-light casements to the east. A plaque on the north extension commemorates William Morris's residence on the site, while a foundation stone on the south extension records the hall's construction. The half-timbered gable ends of the aisles are visible behind the block. The main vessel features an advanced, timber-framed gable end containing a canted oriel window with five leaded casements. The side elevations have aisles with five bays of three-light casements, separated by stepped buttresses. Double half-glazed doors are found in the west bay of the south aisle. The clerestory features 53-light timber casements under segmental arches, separated by pilasters cased in steel. The gabled main roof is topped by a central octagonal fleche with a lead spike and expanded base above ventilation louvres.

Inside, five bay arcades of steel posts are clad with timber, supporting flat entablatures on solid arched braces with panelling. A moulded cornice runs throughout. The roof has arched braces dropping to wall posts and corbels, with two tiers of butt purlins and a boarded ceiling. The aisle roofs are also boarded. A proscenium arch with a roll-moulded surround sits at the west end. The east end contains two pairs of double panelled doors leading to an entrance lobby, and two galleries, a small lower one and a canted gallery in front of the oriel window, both with stick balustrades. The lobby has a four-centred arched doorway leading north and south to the service rooms. Original 1902 cast-iron radiators are set in recesses in the aisle walls. Two gas lamps are attached to the main arcade piers to the north and south.

The front railings consist of a pair of red brick gate piers banded with stone, featuring moulded bases and caps. Double wrought-iron gates have swept top rails, plain lock rails, and square-section verticals with arrow-head finials. Similar railings extend north and south, with alternating spear-head and obelisk finials to the verticals, and return to meet the memorial hall. Cast iron lamp standards, converted from gas to electricity, stand at each corner.
