Description

The Raikes Mausoleum, located in St Mary's Churchyard, was built around 1797 and is designed in a Neo-classical style, reminiscent of the work of architect John Soane. The mausoleum is square and constructed from Portland stone. Each side features a simple segmental pediment, with the walls remaining largely blank except for the south side, which has a sealed entrance. Atop the structure is a finely carved oval sarcophagus, supported by square feet and adorned with fluted sides and ring handles. The sarcophagus includes panels with epitaphs, one of which honors Martha Pelly, the wife of William Raikes, Esq., noting her virtues and superior understanding. William Raikes was a director of the Bank of England.
