Description
Ravensbury Mill is a water mill that has been converted into a factory. It dates from the mid to late 18th century, with the main block built around 1880. The main structure is made of stock brick and features a hipped slate roof. It has an L-shaped plan with a rear right wing and a seven-window range. There is a cambered red brick arch above a plank loft door, with an iron crane hoist positioned above double plank doors. The first floor has cambered red brick arches over cast-iron casements, while the ground floor has blocked window openings. To the left, there is a one-story range from the mid to late 18th century, also made of stock brick, with a gabled concrete tile roof. This section includes a red brick cambered arch and timber lintels over blocked window openings and a plank door in a mid-19th century bay added to the left. The right-hand bay contains the water wheel.
Inside, the mill is notable for the retention of two iron undershot water wheels, which are dated 1884 and of the "Poncelot" type, named after their inventor J.C. Poncelot from 1824. Each wheel features curved sheet-iron buckets and cast or wrought-iron drafts, with a wooden pit wheel to the left that is likely older and possibly reused.
