Description
The Former Lambeth Waterworks District Offices and Stores Building, constructed between 1850 and 1852 by James Simpson for the Lambeth Waterworks, is now used as stores. This Gothic-style building is made of stock brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof with panelled stock brick chimneystacks. It is asymmetrical and consists of one storey, resembling an entrance lodge with four gables topped with sandstone fleur de lys shaped finials and irregularly placed windows.
On the south-west side, there is a small gable on the left with an entrance framed by a sandstone architrave, followed by a larger projecting gable that includes a dogtooth cornice and a clock face. This side also has two additional entrances and two blocked mullioned windows. Two recessed gables contain a wide entrance and a mullioned window. The south-east side features a tripartite mullioned and transomed window, while the north-east side has another tripartite mullioned and transomed window, a narrow mullioned window, an entrance, and a lean-to.
Inside, the building has a plaster ceiling rose and original York stone paving, along with a set of steep steps leading to the clock. In 1995, the building became part of a hall of residence complex for Kingston University.
