Description

The almshouses on Church Hill date back to the 16th century and feature an H-shaped range of buildings constructed from red brick, complete with a first-floor band. The high-pitched tiled roofs have gables on each inner face of the front courtyard and at the center of the outer faces of the side wings. There are four stacks of paired or tripled diagonal brick chimneys, which have been largely rebuilt. The windows consist of 2, 3, and 4-light leaded casements, with some made of old iron and others modern, and brick hoodmoulds are present over some of the windows. The ground floor windows in the outer wings are blocked. A central wide plank door is located under a segmental brick arch. At the center of the first floor, there are three square stone plaques; the middle plaque displays a coat of arms, while each outer plaque features a wyvern within a garland. At the back, there is a central door under a Tudor arch made of rubbed brick.
