Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church located on Church Hill in Harefield. It features a nave, aisles, a north-west tower, a north porch, and a chancel. The church is constructed of flint rubble, with the upper parts of the battlemented tower refaced in brick, and the west ends of the nave and south aisle made from 19th-century red brick and stock brick. The north aisle and east end are stuccoed, while the north porch and south aisle showcase attractive flush flint and stone chequering. The roof is tiled.

Architecturally, the church contains elements from various periods: there is some 12th-century work in the west wall, a 13th-century chancel, and a 14th-century south aisle. The early 16th century saw the addition of the north aisle and chapel, as well as the tower. Inside, there is a gallery in the north aisle and numerous notable monuments, including a four-post tomb to the Countess of Derby from 1636, a monument to Mary, Lady Newdigate from 1692 by Grinling Gibbons, and three urns set into the south chancel wall dedicated to the Newdigate family by J Bacon Jr. Additional wall monuments include works by Gibbons, Rysbrack, and J Bacon Jr, along with several 15th and 16th-century brasses. A portrait bust of William Ashby from 1760 is attributed to Sir Robert Taylor, and there is an elaborate Flemish carved wood reredos and communion rail.
