Description
The entrance archway to the Harefield Australian Military Cemetery was likely built around 1921 by the Imperial War Graves Commission. It is made of Portland stone and features a pylon-shaped arch set into the west side of the brick churchyard wall. The arch has a single arched opening with inset moulding and imposts, flanked by sunken inscription panels that read 'HAREFIELD PARISH CHURCHYARD. AUSTRALIAN MILITARY CEMETERY'. It has a projecting base and plain iron gates. The upper part of the archway displays a shallow sunken cross with the inscription 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'. Above this is a shallow pyramidal coping resting on a twice inset plinth. This archway was erected to commemorate the many Australian soldiers who died from wounds while being treated at the nearby Harefield Place hospital during the First World War. Its design reflects the characteristic style of the Imperial War Graves Commission and shows the influence of Sir Edwin Lutyens.
