Description
Harefield House is a building from the last decade of the 17th century that has been thoroughly altered and refaced in the early 19th century. It stands three storeys tall with five windows, the left bay being slightly set back. The exterior is finished in stucco with incised lines, and features a cornice and blocking course that conceal a low-pitched hipped slate roof. There are chimneys at both ends and in the center, with the central chimney having arched panels. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set in exposed frames. In the two right bays, the windows are blocked, and there is a Tuscan porch in the second bay from the left.
To the left is an early 18th-century building, now covered in similar stucco, which is two storeys high with six irregularly placed windows and a first-floor band. This section has a slated roof and sash windows with glazing bars, some dating from the 18th century. The three-bay right return features long casement windows. There are modern extensions at the back of the building. Inside, there is a late 17th-century staircase with turned balusters and a closed string, featuring an entablature with a swell frieze and a square-section handrail. The vaulted brick cellars also date from the same period, and there is much fine early 19th-century woodwork throughout.
