Description

Harefield War Memorial is a war memorial designed by Frederic Herbert Mansford in 1921, with the names of those who fell in the Second World War added in 1948. In the 21st century, memorial stones for Victoria Cross recipients were also added.

Made of Portland stone, the memorial is located at the south-eastern corner of Harefield village green, overlooking the pond. It features a 10-meter high obelisk on a plinth with a two-tiered base. The north-east and south-west faces of the obelisk display the dates 1914 and 1918, respectively. Each side of the plinth is decorated with a laurel leaf swag. The north-west face of the plinth has the inscription "TO THE/ GLORIOUS/ DEAD," while the other three sides list the names of the 79 fallen. The names of the 34 who died in the Second World War are inscribed on the base of the north-west face of the obelisk.

Surrounding the memorial is a rectangular area of stone paving slabs, featuring four panels of pebble cobbles and a flight of six stone steps leading down to the pond. These steps are flanked at the top by a pair of low stone piers. To the north-west of the obelisk, the paving includes two stones engraved with the names of Victoria Cross recipients, Privates Cecil John Kinross and Robert Edward Ryder, added in 2014. These stones depict the Victoria Cross, along with the names of the regiments and the dates of the actions for which the awards were given.
