Description
The Memorial to Margaret McMillan is located at the Rachel McMillan Nursery School and was erected between May and November 1932, designed by Herbert Baker with an unknown sculptor. The memorial is made of stone on a brick plinth and features a circular column inscribed with 'IN MEMORIAM MARGARET McMILLAN, PALM SUNDAY 1931, MISERIS SUCCURRERE DISCO', which translates to 'I learn to succour the poor', reflecting the McMillan family motto. The column has a roll moulding at the top and a decorated base carved with figures, animals, and plants in bas relief. An iron lantern sits atop the memorial. Margaret McMillan (1860-1931) was a pioneer in nursery education, advocating for health, fresh air, and imaginative play, concepts that were first implemented in a building on this site in 1914.
