Description
The Charnel House to the Church of St Nicholas was built in 1697. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and quoins, topped with a tiled roof that has a restored eaves cornice. The building features gauged brick arches over windows, which are now blocked, and these arches have cut decoration. There is a stone-capped brick plinth, and the windows on either side of the central door still have their original wrought iron grilles. Above the door is an empty panel that once held an oak relief depicting Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones, which is now located inside the church. The interior has been cleared of bones and converted for community use, and it does not contain any notable features. This structure is a rare example of a purpose-built 17th-century charnel house.
