Description
The Blackheath School of Art is a purpose-built art school constructed between 1896 and 1897 by Edmeston and Gabriel in the Queen Anne style. It is made of Leicester brick and features a Westmoreland slate roof with brick chimney-stacks. The front of the building has a low one-storey range with four brick sash windows, which have horns; only the upper part of these windows has glazing bars, with a vertical bar in the lower half. The front also includes rubbed brick voussoirs with keystones. The side elevation features two similar sash windows and a cambered doorcase. At the rear, there is a taller studio with a gambrel roof and four tall brick chimney-stacks. The interior of the studio boasts a Queen post-type roof, large windows, and sloping windows in the roof designed to take advantage of northern light. There are later extensions to the rear that are not of special interest.
