Description
Our Lady Help of Christians Roman Catholic Church, located in Cresswell Park, was built in 1891 by architect A E Purdie. The church features a nave, aisles, and an apsidal chancel, with a north aisle extension serving as a chapel and a south aisle extension functioning as an organ chamber. Designed in the Early English style, it includes stiff-leaf capitals and corbels on the chancel arch. The church has a four-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, along with an elaborate carved reredos and marble columns at the altar. The roof is supported by scissor trusses, and there is a small octagonal baptistery at the southwest corner. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble masonry with freestone dressings, topped by a high-pitched, slated roof. Diagonal buttresses are positioned at the corners, with stepped buttresses at the junctions of the aisles and chapels. A bell turret is located at the northwest corner of the nave. The listed buildings in Cresswell Park form a group.
