Description

This building is a music conservatoire, constructed between 1896 and 1897 by Edmeston and Gabriel. It is an example of the Queen Anne style. The structure is built of Leicester brick, topped with a hipped Westmoreland slate roof and brick chimney stacks. It rises three stories and has five windows across the front. A brick and stone modillion cornice runs along the top. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars only in the upper halves, and horns to the sashes. First-floor windows feature pilasters supporting round-headed pediments containing a shell tympanum and keystone. Ground-floor windows are cambered and have keystones featuring emblems of the British Isles. A central doorcase is framed by pilasters, with a panel above bearing the inscription "BLACKHEATH CONSERVATOIRE OF MUSIC 1896." Double doors lead to a flight of four steps up to the street-level plinth.
