Description

The Adult Education Centre, originally a school, was built between 1900 and 1914. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof, showcasing the Queen Anne style. The building has an elongated plan with a main range that runs parallel to the street, flanked by projected wings at both ends, and a single-storey range in front of the main structure, along with extensions at both ends.

The exterior consists of a two-storey main range with a window arrangement of 1:7:1, including the wings, and a single-storey front range with a window arrangement of 1:3:1:3:1, creating a symmetrical appearance. The front range features banded pilasters at the center and outer bays, a cornice, a blocking course, and a hipped roof. It includes a central Venetian window with a segmental pediment, tripartite windows in the outer bays, and tall rectangular windows in between, all of which have transoms with glazing bars, sashes below the transoms, and overlights above.

The upper floor of the main range is adorned with banded pilasters, round-headed windows with run-out voussoir stones, and modillioned eaves. The roof is punctuated by three low flat-roofed dormers with glazing bars, the central one featuring a small segmental pediment, and a Wren-style two-stage turret topped with a finial. The wings, also with banded pilasters, have open-pedimental gables with stone bands and cartouches, each showcasing a large round-headed window on the upper floor. The right-hand wing includes a ground floor four-light window with glazing similar to that of the single-storey range, and both wings have small open turrets on the ridge of their roofs. There are lower two-storey ranges at each end, designed in a similar but simpler style. The rear and interior of the building were not inspected.
