Description

Riverslie is a large villa, now functioning as a rest home, likely built in the mid-19th century and has undergone alterations. The building features painted roughcast walls and slate roofs, with a cast-iron verandah topped with a glass roof, all designed in a Neo-Jacobean style. It has an elongated double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with attics.

The exterior presents an asymmetric design with a total of five windows arranged as 1:1:1:2, featuring broad gabled second and fourth bays, the second bay projecting forward. These bays flank a narrow three-stage porch tower that has a decorated frieze and an embattled parapet, while the first bay also has a parapet. Framing strips and bands adorn each bay, as well as the parapet and gables.

The ground floor is sheltered by a full-width verandah, which showcases Perpendicular-style open-work standards, wide traceried arches, and a shallow monopitched glass roof. It includes a tall doorway in the third bay with a panelled door and a three-light overlight, a canted bay window in the first bay with French windows, a large rectangular window in the second bay, and a wide altered opening in the fourth bay. The first floor features vertical-rectangular windows with raised surrounds and hoodmoulds, with the fourth bay window being wider and a narrow inserted window to its left. There is also a similar rectangular window at the second floor of the tower, along with small one-light attic windows in the flanking gables, all of which have altered glazing.

The building has a ridge chimney located behind the tower and gable chimneys. The rear and interior of the property were not inspected. Riverslie is noted as the only surviving marine villa along this now-major roadway, facing Seaforth Docks.
