Description
This is a terrace of twelve cottages, numbered 23 to 32 Prior Street, dating from around 1840. Each house is generally two storeys high, with a basement (except for numbers 23, 24, and 32, which lack basements, and number 25, which has three storeys). They have moderately low-pitched slate roofs with visible eaves soffits. The walls are constructed of multicoloured stock brick, with stuccoed basements. Dormers are present on numbers 26 to 31, each with a square shape. Numbers 26 to 31, and also numbers 30 and 31, have a horizontal band at first-floor window sill level. Number 32 is wider than the others, with an additional bay created by a segment-arched carriage entrance on the left side, which features a fanlight above with vertical bars.
The doorways all have gauged brick arches; these are flat on the first floor and on the ground floor of numbers 23 to 36, and also on number 32. Other ground-floor windows are round-headed within an arcaded front, featuring stucco along the springing point. Door openings are of a similar design. Number 25 has moulded stucco architraves around its windows. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars, and some include margin lights. Many of the doors have been replaced, but original four-panel doors remain at numbers 25 and 30. Cast iron handrails and wrought iron area railings, with long and short spearhead designs, are also present.
Numbers 23 to 32 form a cohesive group.
