Description
This is a group of seven pairs of houses located on Shooters Hill Road, dating from the second quarter of the 19th century. Each house is two storeys tall with an attic and basement, and originally had two windows. The houses have moderately pitched slated roofs with a gable end to the road, featuring a central pediment over a cornice and frieze supported by four large pilasters resting on a basement plinth. The facades are stuccoed. The pediment contains two round-arched windows and a central blank arch with a keystone, all with moulded architraves. The first floor features recessed sash windows set within moulded architraves, with many retaining their original glazing bars. A band runs along the first-floor window sills. The ground floor originally had long, three-light sash windows set beneath segmental arches, with moulded architraves and console bracketed cornices. Paired, flat columns were originally positioned on either side of the doors in the outer bays. Some houses have been extended by adding bays to the outer sides, resulting in a wider frontage. Numbers 11, 13, and 19-27 feature prostyle porches with a modified entablature. Numbers 31 and 33 have non-functional window casings. Numbers 23 and 25 have plain, single-light sash windows; number 25 has a rusticated ground floor. Numbers 19 and 21 have an additional window added on either side of the tympanum. Number 19 features a decorative cast iron loggia with a swept roof, which has been renewed in corrugated iron. Numbers 15 and 17 have plain, single-light ground floor windows, as does number 11. The ground floor window at number 13 has been modernized. Number 15 has a two-storey, single-window modern extension attached to the left side. Number 7 originally had a porch, but now features a flat entablature surround. Number 9 has a new entrance with double doors installed for conversion into flats. These houses form a notable group in a prominent location overlooking heathland.
Numbers 1 to 37 (odd), along with gate piers and walls associated with number 1, are designated as a group.
