Description

Nos. 71 to 77, Lee Road are a group of houses dating from the second quarter of the 19th century, with a later addition in the early to mid-19th century, built in the Michael Searles style. The properties consist of three pairs of houses.

Nos. 71 and 73 are a pair, each originally with two storeys, an attic, and a basement, and feature two windows in the central block, set beneath a gable that resembles a pediment with two wide half-lunettes. The soffit is continuous with the side eaves beneath a slated roof of moderate pitch. No. 71 has a two-storey and basement, two-window, flush left entrance extension. No. 73 has a two-storey, one-window, set back right entrance extension. The walls are stuccoed. The recessed sash windows have moulded architraves; those of No. 73 retain their original glazing bars. There are ten steps leading to the front doors, with No. 71 having a rectangular fanlight set back behind a simple entablature surround. A similar surround is present at the door of No. 73, partially concealed by a trellis porch with a swept canopy. Matching trellised balconies are supported by brackets beneath the ground floor windows of both houses.

Nos. 75 and 77 are another pair, also with two storeys, an attic, and a basement, featuring two windows in the main block, again under a pediment with deep eaves and a soffit above the first floor. They have a moderately low-pitched slated roof. No. 75 has a two-storey, two-window left entrance extension with a parapet front, while No. 77 has a two-storey, one-window right entrance extension under a low-pitched hipped slate roof with eaves soffit. The walls are stuccoed and the tympanum of the pediment features two half-lunettes. The sash windows have moulded architraves, with some retaining glazing bars and others having been replaced. The ground floor long sash windows open to trellised wood balconies with swept roofs; the roof of No. 77 is lead, while No. 75’s is now felted. No. 75 has a set of seven steps, with stuccoed side walls, leading to a door of two long panels with a plain rectangular fanlight, set within a simple entablature surround with a deep cornice. No. 77 has eight steps leading to a four-panel door, the two upper panels glazed, with a plain rectangular fanlight in a simple entablature surround.

Nos. 63 to 89 (odd) form a group.
