Description
Nos. 8 and 10 Rotherwick Road are a pair of houses designed as a double-ended hall house, built in 1910 by the Letchworth office of Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. They are constructed from deep red brick in Flemish bond and feature hipped roofs covered with tiles. The houses are two storeys high, with a four-window range to the hall and one window to each crosswing. The design reflects the Vernacular Revival style, similar to Nos. 4 and 6 to the south, but with a broader and more horizontal emphasis that feels contemporary.
The entrances are located at the outer corners of the hall range and are segmental arched with doors of original design. All other openings are flat arched, filled with one-, two-, or four-light windows that have brick mullions and leaded-light casements, also of original design. The houses feature a brick dentil cornice at the eaves and an entablature band, with the outer corners treated as quoin strips in brick. There is a lintel band above all ground-floor openings and a sill band beneath the first-floor windows. Each unit has a moulded ridge stack on the party wall, a ridge stack on each crosswing, and a moulded stack on the rear slope.
These houses form an interesting pair with Nos. 5 and 7 and are part of a group that includes Nos. 1 and 13, 5 and 7 odd, 2, and 4 and 6 even on Rotherwick Road. They represent the first examples of a type that is repeated throughout the Hampstead Garden Suburb.
